West Coast Glaciers

Fox Glacier: On arriving in glacier country, we made our way to a look-out over Fox Glacier. The ice tongue was huge ending in a dirty pile of rock and ice.

We walked to the terminal moraine pile. You can just make out a group of people being guided up the ice-field.

Franz Josef: The next day we headed for Franz Josef Glacier to complete a guided walk of our own. As the glacier has retreated in recent years the only way to get there was via a short helicopter flight. Very exciting!

Some of the pristine ice caves were stunning:

That's a smiley face :-)

We stick together for body warmth (and because we're loving) - cheese!!!!

Catching a tube, ice style!

Cracking ice Dave.

Some of the ice serac's had quite a tilt on them.

Dave had to have a go/ pose with the guide's ice axe - nice lunge!

After a couple of hours our helicopter arrived to whisk us off the ice.

  1. Brings back great memories. I loved the blue ice and the ice caves. You're doing well. Most of the time the west coast is drenched in rain so you're getting some good views. It looks as if the glacier was good fun - it still rates as one of Mum's best days ever.
