Avalanche Peak - Arthur's Pass NP

We arrived in Arthur's Pass NP in heavy rain, and both thought our aspirations to scale the 1833m Avalanche Peak were to be unfulfilled - knowing the steep terrain would be dangerous and impassable in wet weather or in high winds. Fortunately we woke up this morning to a surprise weather window :-)

Good job as the track was, as dave would put it, 'a bit of a scramble'!

The scenery was stunning and we could quickly see why this walk is described as the 'best day walk'  in the South Island, and arguably in the country, rivalling the Tongariro Crossing.

With the Southern Alps stretching out before us, and far fewer trampers, we would put this one top of the pile.

It was incessantly steep, often requiring the use of hands as well as feet in order to progress towards the summit.

Reaching the summit ridge, it was clear just how high we had climbed, with ice, snow and glaciers clinging to the surrounding mountains. Chilly!

The panoramic view from the top, was immense.

As we headed down, with the valley opening ahead of us, we had to concentrate every step of the way as it was still steep, rough terrain.

With wobbly legs we reached our van, after what had been a thoroughly demanding, yet incredibly rewarding tramp!

  2. I see you're tramping now - not walking! Careful Middle Earth is subtlely altering you forever. What a fantastic range of views - we didn't get here so it's a new one on us. Well done for making it - it looks like one not to be missed.
